Bachelors in Teaching & Early Learning - Teacher Certification Option

Highline College has received approval for a Bachelor’s of Applied Science degree in Teaching and Early Learning. Launching in the fall of 2017, this degree will offer programs leading to a BAS in Early Childhood as well as a path to certification as an elementary or preschool teacher.   • The BAS in Teaching and Early Learning program is approved by the Professional Educator Standards Board as a Route 1 Alternate Route to Certification.
  • The program offers endorsements in Early Childhood Education or Elementary Education as the core endorsements. Population endorsements in Special Education, Early Childhood Special Education, English for Speakers of Other Languages, and Bilingual Education are also available.
  • The BAS in T&EL is a two year program after an associates degree. The first year classes are offered evenings/weekends/online. The second year classes are all day and every day Monday through Friday and evenings too.
  • Partner districts include Auburn, Federal Way, Highline, Kent, Renton and Tukwila.

  • AAS in Paraeducation or ECE earned within the last 5 years

Those who have not earned an AAS in Paraeducation or ECE within the last 5 years must have taken and passed the following courses

  • ECED& 160 - Curriculum Development
  • ECED& 190 - Observation and Assessment
  • EDUC 258 - Integrated Curriculum
  • EDUC 281 - Professional Education Development
  • Prerequisites may be challenged through PLA program (experience within 5 years)
